Risk Reduction Clinic

One of the five pillars of the Clinical Breast Care Project is the Risk Reduction program. The goal of the risk reduction program is to help women lower their risk of developing breast cancer. In the Risk Reduction Clinic patients are evaluated for their risk of developing breast cancer. They receive an in-depth personal and family health history by an RN initially and then by a specialized physician. Calculations of risk are based on computer models extensively validated as accurate in identifying women at high risk. This assessment provides information on which to base individualized treatment recommendations. Those recommendations may be:

  • more frequent clinical breast exams
  • the use of endocrine therapy to reduce risk
  • Genetic testing

At the Comprehensive Breast Center at WRAMC the Risk reduction clinic has been evaluating patients for the past 9 years. Patients are referred-

  • By providers from a variety of military treatment facilities (MTF’s)
  • Or a patient can self refer simply by calling and scheduling an appointment
  • There are approximately 450 patients evaluated annually in the risk reduction clinic at Walter Reed Army Medical Center.

Patients are seen by a world renowned medical oncologist, Dr. Raymond Weiss. In April of 2009 Dr. Weiss began seeing patients at our civilian partner site of the Joyce Murtha Breast Care Center in Windber, Pennsylvania.
